Birchwood thoughtfully combines past and present in a modest yet clearly modern addition to an 1895 stone farmhouse in Saukville, Wisconsin. The project adds a bedroom, bathroom, and kitchen, designed to integrate seamlessly with the historic structure while meeting contemporary living needs.
The selected materials—weathered steel, warm wood, polished concrete, and glass—reflect the earthy qualities of the original stone farmhouse, creating a respectful dialogue between old and new. Transparent connections and careful architectural detailing facilitate a smooth transition between the historical and contemporary elements, highlighting the craftsmanship of the existing home.
Inside, the addition provides bright, functional spaces with views thoughtfully framed to connect with the natural landscape. Minimalist detailing and refined finishes create a comfortable, contemporary interior that respects the farmhouse’s heritage.
Birchwood represents a sensitive balance, carefully preserving historical integrity while addressing modern requirements through thoughtful and understated design.
